I absolutely LOVE it as a design element.
It creates such wonderful individuality in a dress. It also offers fantastic options for a Bridesmaid dress.
Wearing the same dress, in the same color, makes many a Bridesmaid feel like they're in a uniform.
Why not provide a few color + element guidelines, and let them loose? It will create a cohesive look with texture, while offering a personal flair.
